HOLY GROUND
Program: Museum of Emotions | Competition
Role: Lead Designer| October 2024
The intent of the Museum of Emotions is to use architecture as the primary tool to create emotional states through consideration of the scales of the spaces, the journey through the space, colour, lighting, and material choice. Participants were asked to design a museum that includes two separate halls that bring out contrasting emotions – one inducing negative emotions, and the other inducing positive emotions. Participants are free to choose the specific emotions they incite with their designs – fear, anger, anxiety, love, happiness, laughter, etc. Museum of Emotions is one of the Buildner silent competitions, in which participants must communicate their ideas without the use of any text. The design concept and thinking behind it must all be communicated solely through the use of visuals, bringing the Jury through storytelling of the participant's renderings, plans, sections, elevations and diagrams.

The two contrasting rooms in the concept of HOLY GROUND are HELL AND HEAVEN. These dichotomies depict emotions of fear, sadness, anger, pain, suffering alongside serenity, happiness, tranquility, wonder and eternal paradise. Occupants first enter Hell on earth; senses are heightened with the the vast emptiness and scale of the room. The sun at it's core radiate heat, as blood bleeds and drips from it's walls instilling fear. Ironically, occupants descend into heaven to seek solitude, peace and ultimate happiness. Metaphorically, Hell on earth depicts today's society. Sadness, grief, pain and suffering fill the world. We need to look internally (Heaven) to see the goodness in people and appreciate the beauty and wonder of life.
